Recent Buy: Southern Corporation

On July 18, 2017, I bought 21 shares of the Southern Corporation (SO) at $47.00 per share for a total of $987.00 at 4.91% yield or $41.16 per year.  Total forward dividend stands at $4,661.59.

My next SO buy will probably be near 5% yield or $46.40. Also GIS appears to be leveling out. So much to buy so little time.

  1. Great buy I had my eye on both GIS and SO recently. I pulled the trigger on SO and I may add more for my next purchase. We'll see if it stays around $47 or not.

  2. SO definitely crossed my radar again recently. Any thoughts on the sunk costs with the Mississippi "clean coal" project, or the cost over runs at Plant Vogtle?

    1. hey SFD,

the clean coal project is dead. They are converting the kemper plant into a gas-fired plant. It had good potential but ultimately failed because they couldn't meet EPA coal soot standards on a consistent basis.

The Vogtle plant is being lobbied heavily by both the green and nuclear agency. Basically voglte is the only nuclear plant approved by the govt to be constructed at this current time and been going through constant changes based on EPA regulations. If Voglte is killed the largest electricity green power supplier will no longer exist and we have to wait for solar cells to reach 80%+ efficiency and a battery to be able to keep all that charged...which is very unlikely. I believe it will be built but with some help from lobbying groups

    2. Thanks for the feedback! I figured the show would go on in Mississippi, but didn't know quite as much about the Voglte plant. Shareholder or not, that'll be quite the project to watch.

  4. Nice pick up. Like SO at these levels. Juicy current yield with this buy.

    1. hey keith. exactly the reason why I'm picking up SO. It's having a bad time with its projects and allowing us investors to higher yield while we wait for the turnaround. thanks for visiting
